Foodtech JSC 2024 Tuna Sourcing Report
At Foodtech JSC, we’re proud to commit with the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) to make tuna fishing more sustainable and open. This report meets ISSF Conservation Measure 2.5, sharing how we sourced our tuna in 2024 and laying out our plan to hit the ISSF’s 2023-2027 target—getting all our tuna from fisheries that either meet Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standards or are part of solid Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) by 2027.
2024 Tuna Sourcing Breakdown
Total Tuna Purchased: 4,249.693 round tons
FISHERY SOURCES:
A.
The percentage of Foodtech JSC’s purchases (measured in round ton equivalents) for each of the following fishery source categories:
Fisheries certified by the MSC: 55.77%
Fisheries that have entered full assessment for MSC certification: 0%
Fisheries in the MSC improvement program: 0%
Comprehensive FIPs that have been publicly listed and have achieved progress in the prior 24 months: 0%
None of the above: 44.23%
A roadmap and timeline to increase the percentage of Foodtech JSC’s purchases from fisheries certified by the MSC:
We’re increasing our MSC-certified skipjack tuna purchases by 2-3% each year. We’re also making sure at least 40% of our tuna stays MSC-certified. This keeps us on track for high-quality, sustainable sourcing.
A roadmap and timeline to decrease the percentage of Foodtech JSC’s purchases from comprehensive FIPs that have been publicly listed have not achieved progress in more than 24 months:
FIPs skipjack is an alternative for MSC skipjack, since we focus more on MSC skipjack until the portion of the FIPs skipjack is at 0-5%.
A roadmap and timeline to decrease the percentage of Foodtech JSC’s purchases from the “none of the above” category:
We’re working and expecting the "none of the above' category to gradually reduce at least 2-3% every year. The "none of the above" portion is from the local and imported purse seiner tuna. Our target is to increase the MSC purchasing, so it will directly reduce the purchasing of the purse seiner skipjack.
B.
The percentage of Foodtech JSC’s purchases (measured in round ton equivalents) for each of the following supplier source categories:
ISSF participating companies (Founding, Full, and Associate members): 12.34 %
Data Check companies designated by ISSF (as defined by the General Provisions and Terms and Conditions for Data Check Companies) that have a published compliance audit report with respect to ISSF Conservation Measures 2.2, 1.1, 4.1, 4.2, and 5.1, as determined and reported by the ISSF external auditor: 0%
Direct from vessels: 12.59%
None of the above: 75.07%
A roadmap and timeline to decrease the percentage of Foodtech JSC’s purchase from the “none of the above”:
As we focus on MSC-certified skipjack tuna, many of our current suppliers are not ISSF members. However, we plan to increase sourcing from ISSF participating companies to at least 25% of our total purchases by the end of 2026. To reach this target, we will increase purchasing from the Spanish fleets, which are ISSF participating companies. For the "none of the above" portion, the majority from the 'direct from vessels' will be gradually reduced because it is Non-MSC and we are focusing on increasing MSC skipjack.
